Chapter Six

“Good morning. Did you sleep well, Sorrel?”

“I did, thank you,” I said. I collected a cup of coffee and glanced over. Her cup was nearly dry, so I filled it for her before making a plate. I sat down and sipped at my coffee for a minute.

“I collected your assignment,” she said. “It will get turned in on time.”

“Thank you,” I said. I ate quietly for a minute.

“Sorrel?” I put my fork down and looked up at her. “I’m sorry.”

“You keep saying that,” I said, the same words from last night. “I tell you what, Octavia. If I walk away from this with my mind intact, I’ll forgive you.”

“Really?”

“If I actually graduate and my grades don’t suffer.”

“No one is going to care if your grades aren’t perfect.”

“I’ll care,” I said. “I don’t give a shit what anyone else thinks.”

“Yes, you do. I bet there’s a part of you that cares what your mother thinks.”

“Fine. I lied. I do care. But I’m trying not to.”

“Fair enough. If you figure out how, let me know.”

“I’ll write a book,” I said sarcastically. “What are your plans for the day?”

“I have to go to the office. That’s part of the reason I was apologizing.”

“Lunch alone. I’ll survive.”

“And we need to make another video before I go.”

“Are you going to put me back in the chair for it?”

“Yes, and I want you in the same clothing you were wearing.”

“Eww.”

“Well, it doesn’t need to be the same underthings.”

“Proof of life?”

“Yes. Are you willing to lie?”

“To Mother?”

“And anyone else who sees.”

“What if I said ‘no’?”

“Then you say ‘no’.”

“What did you want me to say?”

“Half the truth. I’m not abusing you, but I’ve kept you in the chair.”

“Your original plan.”

“Right.”

“I don’t look like I’ve been in that chair for two days,” I said. “And the longer this goes on, the more I should deteriorate. I’m not sure I’m that good an actor.”

“We’ll worry about that later. It won’t be entirely pleasant, but you’ll look the part.”

“Do you really think this is going to tug her heartstrings?”

“More so than if I show her your bedroom.”

“Fine,” I said. “Whatever.”

“Thank you.”

“Will you be home for dinner?”

“I should be,” she replied.

I nodded. “All right.”

I finished breakfast. She led me to the same room as before. My clothes were waiting. She turned her back while I changed then sat down in the chair, waiting. “Ready, I guess.”

She turned and crossed the room to me. I said nothing as she did all the straps, but I watched her every move. She finished and stepped away. When she came back, she had a squirt bottle of, presumably, water.

“Fuck,” I said.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop apologizing.”

“It’s a little automatic.”

“Whatever,” I said. I closed my eyes. “Do whatever you’re going to do.”

“I’m sorry,” she said again. But she stepped closer. She misted me down, especially my hair and clothing. Then she turned the lights on and examined me before making a point of really misting my underarms. I didn’t say a word.

She futzed with my hair. Then she intentionally moved some across my face.
